CANDIDIASIS
It is basically a fungal infection caused by candida, typically on the skin or mucous membranes. It is a type of yeast that normally resides in intestinal tract, mucous membranes and skin. It’s overgrowth can produce symptoms which may vary depending upon the site affected.
TYPES OF CANDIDIASIS:
- Oropharyngeal/ esophageal candidiasis: when candida yeast spread in mouth and throat, it can cause infection called thrush(oropharyngeal candidiasis. Symptoms may include cracking, redness and soreness on corner of mouth. There mabe white or yellow patches on tongue, cheeks or inside mouth. Pain while swallowing food.
- Genital/ vulvovaginal candidiasis: it causes pain, redness, burning, itching and swelling of vagina and vulva. There may also be vaginal discharge which may be thick yellowish or greenish in color.
- Invasive candidiasis: invasive candidiasis is a serious infection that can affect the blood, heart, brain, eyes, bones, and other parts of the body. Candidemia, a bloodstream infection with Candida, is a common infection in hospitalized patients.
