Appendix is a 3-1/2 inch long pouch like structure made of tissue extending from large intestine. Its inflammation and formation of pus inside it causes pain and this condition is called as appendicitis. It occurs most often between 10 to 30 years of age. Severe pain around the bellybutton, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal swelling, and low grade fever are very common symptoms of appendicitis. It can be caused due to obstruction in the appendix leading to bacteria multiplication and the formation of pus. If left untreated, it may eventually burst, or perforate, leading to spilling of infectious materials into the abdominal cavity which may even lead to peritonitis. It can be ruled out by doing a ultrasonography of abdomen.

Bryonia is indicated when there is inflammation of serous membranes. There is marked dryness of gut. There is pain abdomen worse by least motion and patient is constipated. Stools are hard, dark in color. While colocynth is indicated when there is pain in abdomen and patient has to bend double or patient bend on knees out of pain. Echinacea works well when there is septic appendicitis.
