Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).  Abdominal pain, severe diarrhea and malnutrition are the common symptoms of crohn’s disease. It is caused due to inflammation of the linning of the intestines. The exact cause of Crohn’s disease remains unknown. Crohn’s disease is caused by a combination of environmental, immune and bacterial factors in genetically susceptible individuals. The inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease often spreads deep into the layers of affected bowel tissue. Like ulcerative colitis, another common IBD, Crohn’s disease can be both painful and debilitating, and sometimes may lead to life-threatening complications. The most common areas affected by Crohn’s disease are the last part of the small intestine (ileum) and the colon. Inflammation may be confined to the bowel wall, which can lead to scarring or stenosis, or inflammation may spread through the bowel wall (fistula).

Signs and symptoms of Crohn’s disease can range from mild to severe and may develop gradually or come on suddenly. There is also a remission period when you have no signs or symptoms. When the disease is active, signs and symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, blood in stool, ulcers on the surface of intestines, reduced appetite and weight loss. People with severe Crohn’s disease may also experience fever, fatigue, arthritis, eye inflammation, mouth sores, skin disorders, inflammation of the liver or bile ducts, delayed growth or sexual development, in children.
